Don Greene

CEO

While trends may come and go, one thing has remained constant: Don’s unwavering support for A. Hoke Ltd.’s leading ladies over the years. While Don’s career in the industry was a catalyst for Alma Greene launching the firm, today, he lends his wealth of industry knowledge and 55 years of experience to support Elaine and the team. Always a steadfast presence behind the scenes, Don has a remarkable story of success all his own.

Born in Asheville, NC, booming job opportunities in Charlotte brought him and his family to the city in the mid-1960s when he was a young man. At 19, with no clear career goal, Don took a leap of faith, which he often calls dumb luck, and applied for a designer assistant position at a large interior design firm in Charlotte.

During the interview, a pivotal moment occurred. The firm’s owner remarked, “Young man, you have no clue where you’re going. If you will come to work for me, I’ll teach you an industry you can excel in if you work hard.” The statement resonated with Don. This unexpected yet poignant acknowledgment of his uncertainty was followed by an offer that would eventually change his life.

Don’s initial role was as an assistant drapery hanger. Later, he transitioned from assisting to becoming the head drapery installer. He took on further responsibilities that evolved into an office manager and then the assistant manager of the carpet department. Then, one day, a carpet supplier extended an offer to manage sales in eastern North Carolina, marking a significant step in his career, which relocated him and his new bride, Alma Hoke Greene to Raleigh.
